Costa Rica - Information on Return Day (Saturday, June 8) and Re-Entry Day (Sunday, June 9)

Parents,

Menlo Abroad will soon be coming home. I know the students are looking forward to seeing you as much as you are looking forward to seeing them. They have had unique and powerful experiences in the last three weeks and will no doubt have much to share with you, although they will need a good night's sleep first!

What follows are details regarding Saturday, June 8 (the return), and Sunday, June 9 (the re-entry day). 

SATURDAY (Return)

The Costa Rica group's return flight itinerary is below:

Sat 08 June San Jose (SJO) - Los Angeles (LAX) UA 1553 06:00 AM - 11:20 AM Economy
Sat 08 June Los Angeles (LAX) - San Francisco (SFO) UA 2234 02:00 PM - 03:35 PM Economy

The flights are currently on time, scheduled to arrive at SFO on Saturday at  3:35 PM, but you might want to check the flight status for updates closer to the group's arrival. As the group is going through customs at LAX, they will arrive at United Airlines, domestic, Terminal 3.  Please be there to meet them and to take them home.

SUNDAY (Re-entry)

The Sunday schedule for all Menlo Abroad students is below. The students' activities begin with ice cream in the commons followed by guided discussions in small groups in which they share experiences and reflections with students from the other Abroad trips. This activity will be followed by preparation for the evening and then yearbook distribution and signing.

The catered celebration dinner for students and parents is the final event of Menlo Abroad. It is a chance for us all to come together, to share stories and insights from the last three weeks, and to appreciate what your children and you have been through individually and collectively. The event should conclude by about 7:30 pm.

Please plan to attend this event with your children!

4:20 pm Yearbook distribution and signing

Welcome to almost Costa Rica! We are all so excited to jumpstart this adventure but, of course, also a bit nervous about some things at the same time. Today, we discussed everything from our poop consistency to our fears about the upcoming three weeks. Our group, from different grades and friend groups, began bonding and we are excited to start forming close relationships with one another.  We split into groups by our birthdays, made handshakes, and took awkward holiday card photos. We also chose songs that reflect our feelings about the upcoming trip, including "Three Little Birds" by Bob Marley, "Time of Our Lives" by Pitbull, and "La Bamba" by Ritchie Valens. ¡Estamos en Pura Vida!

After a long day of travel filled with delays, layovers, and attempts at sleep, we have finally arrived in Costa Rica! Boarding the bus to Chilamate, we surrendered our phones, ready to embark on our adventure. The anticipation for a satisfying first meal at Riverside Pizzeria was palpable; sandwiches and pizza provided a welcome break during the three-hour bus ride filled with song games and lively chatter. Upon arrival in Chilamate, we were all eager to have reached our destination for the day (and to finally take a shower).
